Simon Steward QC discusses a myriad of topics in the tax dispute arena, providing a background of the types of tax work frequently gained by the Bar, where this work comes from and the placement of the Victorian Bar nationally on these disputes.
In depth discussion of past trends of the last ten years including ATO losses and developments since the appointment of Chris Jordan, the first outside Commissioner of Taxation is compared with predicted prevailing trends of the next five years including taxation of multinationals, and ways in which potential problems posed will be addressed. Other trends discussed include CGT apportionment cases, statutory interpretation in the field of Consolidation, treaty and capital/revenue cases.
